BBC Sports presenter is quitting her job after 13 years following a heartbreaking message from her four-year-old daughter
BBC Sports presenter Natalie Pirks has revealed how a message from her four-year-old daughter ‘burnt into my memory’ is behind her decision to quit broadcasting after 13 years.
Pirks announced on Instagram on Tuesday that she is leaving her role as a world traveler after a hugely successful stint at the company, during which she covered four World Cups and four Olympic Games.
In a reflective post, she shared how an eye-opening drawing by her four-year-old left an indelible impression on her, and discussed her desire to be more present in the important moments.
“In two weeks I will be leaving the job I have always dreamed of,” she wrote.
‘Here’s why: over twenty years in broadcasting, four World Cups, four Olympic Games, countless grand finals. By every measure I made it. But my daughter once made a drawing of me that is burned into my memory.’

‘I was lying (pregnant) and working on my phone. She was only four years old. And she was right. Successful on paper. Spinning plates in real life. Good at your job, but your own harshest critic, missing important moments with your family, wondering if this is really it? I see you.
“Here’s what these decades have actually taught me: Your job is the most important of the least important things. I’m running toward balance and presence, using all the skills I’ve learned in 25 years in media.
‘Have you ever had the feeling that a completely different life exists for you? That you are still ambitious and have plenty to give, but long for more peace in your work? Let me know in the comments if I’m not the only one and follow if you recognize yourself. The best is just beginning…’
Her post received a flood of comments, with Sky Sports star Hayley McQueen writing: ‘Absolutely, but what a role model you have been to your own girls and to everyone who has enjoyed watching you over the years! X’
Fellow BBC star Kelly Somers said: ‘Totally, totally related!!! I will never forget standing in a mixed zone in Russia with you and talking about your girls at home and thinking what a great role model you were for them. Congratulations on an incredible time and for doing what’s best for you and them. ❤️’
Laura Woods added: ‘RELATE x 1000000000 well done Nat this is amazing xxx’
Sky star Bianca Westwood said: ‘I 100% felt this way and I don’t even have kids! I needed a slower pace, a more meaningful use of time, and not having to answer to men! Good luck in your next phase. I’m sure it will be great x’
Fellow presenter Angus Scott said: ‘You’re absolutely right. Whether you’re a woman or a man, it’s about balance and we often get it wrong.
‘We are committed to our work, but the work never recognizes that in return. We are committed to our families, and they will recognize that – when we are present. We all get sucked into this ‘glamorous’ world, but it’s just television.
“Well played Nat and congratulations on making a good choice.”
