Kemi Badenoch has vowed to ‘bring the toughness back’ to Britain as she promised tough action on welfare, asylum and low-level crime.

The Conservative leader said voters were “crying out” for a tougher approach that would have “consequences” for those who rip off the system.

Ms Badenoch told the Daily Mail that a Tory government would prevent anyone from claiming benefits as a ‘lifestyle’ choice and called for a ‘no-tolerance approach’ to crimes such as shoplifting, fare evasion, vandalism and public drug use.

She promised funding for 10,000 more police officers to implement a ‘broken windows’ style strategy, which helped clean up New York in the 1990s, to ensure that even small acts of anti-social behavior are tackled seriously.

But Ms Badenoch urged police to also prioritize crimes that damage the fabric of society, rather than prosecuting motorists for minor offences.

Now you can have your say in the latest Daily Mail poll. Do you think she is right when she says we need to ‘bring the power back’ to Britain?

Yesterday’s poll asked Mail readers: ‘Should councils increase parking fines from £70 to £160?’ Of the more than 8,000 votes, 94 percent said ‘no’ and 6 percent said ‘yes’.
