A police chase ended in carnage when a fleeing driver crashed into parked cars on a quiet residential street.

Doorbell footage captured the moment the vehicle lost control on Ancona Road in Plumstead, south-east London, in the early hours of Monday – before officers caught the driver and seized a stash of drugs.

The video shows the car crashing at high speed into a row of vehicles on the left side of the street, parked in front of terraced houses, after police tried to pull it over for erratic driving.

It was just before 2am when residents were woken by a massive crash to find the ‘worst crash they have ever seen’ outside.

The driver rammed straight into at least three cars, including a white Fiat that was thrown several meters into the air, leaving six vehicles completely written off.

Seconds later, the blue lights of police cars filled the street and officers were able to sprint to the scene of the accident.

Off camera, the injured driver tried to run away but was grabbed by officers and arrested before being taken to hospital. Class A drugs were later recovered from the car.

The Fiat was one of six cars written off when the fleeing driver crashed into parked vehicles in the early hours of Monday

The Fiat was owned by Naddia Khan’s mother, who told the Daily Mail: ‘We were all asleep and woke up at 2am to the sound of a big crash. We were really shocked, and still are.

‘The fiat involved is my mother’s. It was the worst collision we have ever seen: seven cars were damaged, six of which were written off.

‘As far as I know this has never happened in this area; it is a horrific incident.

‘The damage to my mother’s car was terrible. We are still trying to get over the shock we felt when we walked out at night.”

Naddia recorded a video of police inspecting the pile of twisted metal now blocking the road, while a cordon closed off the section.

Photos from the next morning show the Fiat lying on its side on the sidewalk, completely mangled.

Others had been shunted across the road and had their doors torn off.

The Metropolitan Police said: ‘Around 1.55am a car collided with a number of parked cars on Ancona Road SE18.

‘The incident followed a brief police pursuit after the vehicle failed to stop for officers who noticed erratic driving.

‘Following the collision, the driver – a man in his 30s – ran from the car but was stopped by officers and arrested for various offences.

‘He was taken to hospital for injuries sustained as a result of the collision and later released into police custody where he remains.

‘A quantity of suspected Class A drugs was found in the car.’
