Horror after copperhead snake spotted mayor’s 39-year-old wife while her husband grilled salmon in a comfortable home in North Carolina
A North Carolina mayor has told of the terrifying moment his wife was bitten by a venomous copperhead snake as they were about to eat dinner outside their suburban home.
Republican Mayor Robert Burns said his partner Lauren was attacked by the 4-foot-long reptile on Wednesday while grilling salmon on their backyard patio in Monroe, just outside Charlotte.
“She’s there on the phone with her dad and I hear ‘it’s not good, honey,'” Burns told Fox News on Tuesday. “I’m thinking, ‘What’s not good? The salmon will be great, honey. I don’t know what you’re talking about.’
Burns said his wife felt a sharp pain in her lower leg, and when he rushed to her aid he found “two puncture wounds bleeding just above her ankle.”
The mayor of Monroe said his teenage son sprinted outside to slaughter the snake while taking his wife to Atrium Health hospital in Matthews for treatment.
According to the National Geographic, Copperhead snakes are responsible for more venomous bites than any other snake type in the United States. Although most people recover from copperhead snake bites, they are extremely painful and can be fatal.
Burns provided an update on his wife’s condition via X the day after she was attacked by one of the venomous vipers. “So… word has gotten out that my lovely wife was bitten by a large copperhead last night,” Burns wrote Thursday.
“When it happened, we rushed her to the ER. The staff at our local hospital were absolutely wonderful. They were responsive, friendly, very helpful and overall fantastic.

‘Our biggest concern was the possibility that it would not get better and that we would have to use the antidote, which carries its own risks, along with the possibility of an extended stay.
“Thankfully, things stabilized, her vitals were stable and they sent us home. However, we are not out of the woods yet.
‘She’s in a lot of pain, probably more than I’ve ever seen her. We are a busy family with a lot going on right now, but we truly cherish your prayers and are grateful for all the support, texts, calls, emails and well wishes. We love you all. Keep praying.”
Three days later, Burns assured his followers that thanks to their prayers, Lauren was beginning to recover.
“My friends, PRAYER WORKS,” he wrote on Sunday. “My dear wife is doing remarkably well considering how bad off she was just two days ago.
‘Yesterday she went a step further in her pain and today she is still in a lot of pain, but is even better to the point where she is actually somewhat upright with the help of crutches.

‘We are grateful for all the love and support. Thanks to her, I count my blessings every day.
“Seeing her like this these past few days has not been easy for our children and for myself, but our family’s trust rests in the Great Healer. And HE IS ANSWERED. God bless each of you. Thank you.’
Copperhead snakes thrive in both rural and suburban areas such as Monroe, a city about 25 miles southeast of Charlotte, close to the South Carolina border.
They are found in dozens of states in the South and East, from southern New England to Texas and Florida.
The sturdy snakes are usually about one meter long and gray or yellow-brown in color, with bronze-colored heads and hourglass-shaped stripes.
Copperhead snake bites are rarely fatal, but can be fatal if the victim is older or has a weakened immune system.

If the snake is bitten by one of the reptiles, the CDC recommends taking a photo of the snake so doctors can identify the bite type.
Doctors also recommend washing the bite gently with soap and removing watches and jewelry near the bite area, as they are likely to swell.
The CDC warns against taking painkillers, applying ice or a tourniquet, or trying to suck out the venom.
