Once upon a time we ordered our dogs to get off the couch.
But since the lockdown, man’s best friend has become such an important part of the family that we buy our spoiled pooches their own.
Forget your humble dog bed; dog sofas feature the same high backs, padded arms, plush velvet and suede as their human counterparts, in every style from chaise lounge to Chesterfield.
And while many of them cost as much as the full version, with prices reaching a gulp-inducing £535, at least you don’t have to worry about your pet occupying the top spot on the couch.
Here TANITH CAREY and her cockapoo Honey try them on for custom…
HONEY AND MUSTARD
Honey Pet Sofa, medium size (H59cm x W120cm x D80cm), £279, dfs.co.uk
Tanith Carey and her cockapoo Honey put a selection of dog beds available in the UK to the test. Pictured: Honey Pet Sofa
Spending on pets in the UK soared to a record £8bn last year after the pandemic proved how important pets are to us to keep us company. In response, furniture giant DFS started selling pet versions of their sofas online two months ago. They all share the same fabrics, construction and details, but are reduced in size.
This model comes in a trendy mustard color and durable corduroy with thick cord. It is available in three sizes, 105 cm, 120 cm and 140 cm wide.
Honey always prefers a firm dog bed – and this one is so firm that it comes with a 15-year warranty on the frame. She tried the medium for size and there was plenty of room however she felt like arranging herself so she happily stayed with it for a nap. Plus, this vibrant shade sure looks good with any coat color. 4/5
THE DOG CHESTERFIELD
Blue denim dog sofa from Paw Hut (32.5cm x 74cm x 41cm), £59.99, wayfair.co.uk
Tanith said that Paw Hut’s blue denim dog bed (pictured) was a squeeze for her cockapoo Honey
If you prefer a more classic style, this Chesterfield-esque design could be a perfect fit. It has classic proportions but is made of durable dark blue denim-like material. Since it comes in one size, it was a bit tight for Honey, but my cats figured it out for their nap and – because the material is quite rough – also as a scratching post. 2/5
VELVET FOR A PLUSH POOCH
Plush Animal Sofa, Large (56cm x 139cm x 81cm), £319, dfs.co.uk
Tanith said Plush Pet Sofa (pictured) is so big you’ll have a challenge keeping people off it who may not realize it’s for the dog
Even human sofas don’t come much more luxurious than this plush velvet sofa, and owners can choose from an amazing array of 19 shades, from cinnamon brown to rosy pink.
However, I’m slightly shocked at the size – Honey tried the large one which was 139cm wide – because I’ve had smaller real sofas in my time. In fact, it’s so big that you’ll have a challenge keeping people off it who may not realize it’s for the dog.4/5
Amazon Basics pet lounger, small (16.5cm x 63.5cm x 50.8cm), £27.73, amazon.co.uk
Tanith said Amazon Basics’ Pet sofa lounger (pictured) is lightweight and easy to transport
When Honey was a puppy I must have spent hundreds on dog baskets she chewed up. So as a comfortable, high quality dog bed at a reasonable price, this is a good start.
It’s shaped like a rectangular futon made from memory foam, which molds to your dog’s body and cushions his joints.
The cover is also easy to unzip and throw in the washing machine, and while it’s not as glamorous as some of the others Honey has tried, it’s lightweight and easy to transport, so would be great to take with you on the go. vacation or in the back of the car. 3/5
MINI-ME SUPER BANK
Holly Pet Sofa, one size (53cm x 120cm x 70cm), £535, furniturevillage.co.uk
Tanith said Holly Pet Sofa (pictured) is deep enough for Honey to lie in any direction without her paws hanging off
If we needed any more proof that we spoil our dogs, this is it. This is a scaled-down version of Furniture Village’s throne-style modular sofa, The Holly.
For humans, a three-seater is £1,405. For dogs, the same style – with the same medieval-style studs – is a third of the price, currently at a princely £535. At 120cm in diameter, however, you’ll need a lot of space in your living room – or a larger house.
It comes in a hardwearing chenille velvet fabric, which is as soft as Honey’s fur, and at 70cm it was just deep enough for her to lie in all directions without her paws hanging off. Plan ahead if you want one though – right now the website shows a 19-week wait.4/5
MUTTS MADE IT
Bonnie Gray Sofa, one size (34cm x 72cm x 45cm), £149, made.com
Tanith said Bonnie Gray Sofa (pictured) is best suited for small dogs and cats
The pioneers of the dog sofa are trendy retailer made.com, which first saw a breed of pet owners who didn’t want to compromise on their interior style.
One of their latest designs is the Bonnie dog sofa, inspired by their Bonnie chair in bouclé fabric. While not identical, this painfully cool retro style was also the perfect style and color combination for my gray Made sofa. Right now it comes in just one size, 72cm wide, so it’s better suited to smaller dogs and cats.3/5
BUILD YOUR OWN
Omlet extra bed, large (26.5 cm x 105.5 cm x 71.5 cm), omlet.nl
Tanith said the Omlet pillow (pictured) is easy to clean and is made from memory foam that molds to your dog’s body for dreamier naps
We humans love that fresh linen feeling. Now dogs can get that too with this custom designed dog bed from Omlet, which comes with removable covers that you can unzip and wash along with the rest of your linens.
The fact that they are easy to clean allows for a choice of 15 more bold colors in the soft geometric fabric. You can choose the size and color of the base, as well as which legs to put on it, ranging from steel hairpin style to tapered wood. It’s also made of memory foam to mold to your dog’s body for dreamier naps and no doubt more snoring from Honey.5/5
THE GOOD LIFE
Woodleigh Pet Couch, Medium (53cm x 117cm x 80cm), £299, dfs.co.uk
Tanith said Woodleigh Pet Sofa (pictured) has a firm consistency and comes in three sizes
This adorable sofa – with three Chesterfield-esque knobs – is almost an exact replica of the full-size DFS Woodleigh sofa. It can be designed for any color scheme from mocha to blush and cream. It’s not a couch to sink into – it has a firm consistency with foam cushions that you don’t need to plump.
For furry companions, there are three sizes, 102 cm, 117 cm and 137 cm wide. As a medium sized cockapoo, Honey had plenty of room to swing her tail on the medium and was able to sit at the same height as me on my couch – so she definitely feels like part of the family. 4/5
Kyali Dog Sofa, S/M (26cm x 75cm x 49cm), £169. made.com
Tanith said Kyali Dog Sofa (pictured) was Honey’s favorite because she immediately recognized it as a dog bed and it was just the right size
This Scandinavian dog sofa is so chic that it is a statement piece of furniture in its own right. It’s perfectly designed with a grainy ash wood frame, so Honey feels cozy when she curls up. The gray base and side pads quickly attach with Velcro, making it look like it will stand up to any attempt by your dog to remove them for chewing. And unlike some of the other dog sofas here, you don’t have to scale your home.
This one was by far Honey’s favorite. It was just the right size and she immediately recognized it as a dog bed, while the others left her a little baffled as to whether or not she was allowed on it. The height of the brim was also just high enough for her snout to rest on, so she could keep an eye on the household when she was resting.5/5
