Which customised shampoos and conditioners will give you a good hair day?

16

When it comes to shampoo, we’re spoiled for choice – we can choose from restructuring to volumising, from nourishing to clarifying, from purifying to balancing. Awesome!

But the abundance of choice can make your head spin so much that it’s tempting to choose ‘for all hair types’.

Fortunately, there is a new option: custom shampoo.

A number of beauty brands offer shampoo and conditioner that are specially formulated for you or chosen from their range, or made from scratch as a custom product.

The information you provide through a website quiz is used to determine exactly what works best for you.

So I made it personal to find out which of these custom products would give me a good hair day.

CHOOSE YOUR ELIXIRS

Rituals The Hair Temple, £17.50 per 230ml bottle, rituals.com

The Hair Temple on the Rituals website promises to ‘help you choose two elixirs’ [from ten], adapted to your hair type and needs, to add to your favorite Rituals shampoo and conditioner’.

I answer five questions about my hair and then choose Rituals Indian Rose & Almond Oil Shampoo as a base. It contains no silicones or parabens.

Since I’m looking for ‘scalp therapy’ and ‘shine’, argan oil (rich in vitamin E) and shikakai (a shrub native to India and China, and apparently used in hair care since about 4,500 years ago) are added as my elixirs.

A 230ml bottle costs £17.50 — less expensive than my regular shampoo. It’s more of a nod to my preferences than luxuriously tailored, but I’m impressed. My hair feels well cared for and looks a bit thicker. 3/5

THE BEST FOR CUSTOMIZED

Feature of Beauty Custom Shampoo & Conditioner, £39 per 473ml duo, functionofbeauty.com

The blurb reads, “Sometimes you need a team of environmentally conscious, MIT-trained scientists and engineers to help you with your care regimen.”

Who could resist the idea of such an erudite, ethical group fighting on their behalf?

I take a quiz to build my ‘hair profile’, where I select five goals (replenish hair, frizz-free, soothe scalp, strengthen, rejuvenate) and choose a silicone-free formula plus a natural fragrance – eucalyptus, mint, lavender, rosemary ( although fragrance-free is an option). I put his power on ‘light’.

The 473ml bottles of shampoo and conditioner total £39 – no more than a ready-to-use luxury brand. It is wonderful to use and contains no sulfates, parabens, phthalates, mineral oils or gluten.

(Phthalates can interfere with hormone function and some people find that mineral oils irritate their scalp.) My hair feels soft and has slightly less frizz than usual. 5/5

STRESS-BUSTER

Aura Shampoo and Conditioner, £54 for 295ml duo, aurahaircare.uk

The purpose of Aura is to transform our ‘mirror moments’. I’m impressed by questions like “If your hair is parted in the middle, how much of your scalp can you see?” to determine how dense or fine my hair is.

In addition to hair care questions, there are also questions about stress, diet and exercise to find out the “why” behind your current hair profile.

I can choose my shampoo aroma-free. The brand offers “unlimited formula combinations” – and my custom ingredients include tea tree leaf oil, sunflower oil glycerides, and caffeine.

The shampoo costs £30, as does the conditioner – the discount total is £54. It’s still quite pricey and I doubt shampoo can be an antidote to stress, but after one wash my hair is definitely smoother than usual. 4/5

FIT YOU

Ouai Fine Shampoo and Conditioner, £22 per 300ml bottle, theouai.co.uk

This is hair care with humor. To the quiz question of the website ‘Which describes your hair best?’ I choose ‘Volume is just a button on your phone’.

I select as ‘worries’ dry flaky scalp, slow hair growth and frizz; and my ‘dream’ for my hair is frizz-free, thickened and ‘undone bedhead’ (as if, but one can dream).

The website suggests her Fine Shampoo and Fine Conditioner with Biotin to nourish and strengthen, and Chia Seed Oil for a plumper look (each 300ml bottle, £22).

Since it has four shampoos (detox, thick, fine, medium), I could have come to this conclusion myself.

Not as exclusive as I’m used to now, but it actually blends well with my hair and gives body if not silky smoothness. 3/5

GOOD HAIR WAVES

That Good Hair shampoo, £60 per 250ml bottle, thatgoodhair.co.uk

Paris Reveira, 23, of Jamaican and Indian descent, has always struggled to find products that matched her hair.

After qualifying as a practitioner specializing in hair loss with the International Association of Trichologists, she founded That Good Hair, with a focus on “tailor-made products for curly hair” (plus allergies, sensitive scalp and conditions such as alopecia and dandruff) .

The formulas are mixed by hand in a lab and Paris uses only natural ingredients. You can buy 100ml of custom shampoo and conditioner for £25 before committing to full sizes.

As a scalp conditioning base, I go for hair-strengthening green tea. I also select two active ingredients: caffeine, good for promoting hair growth, fighting hair loss and adding shine; and hibiscus powder, which encourages thicker hair and helps prevent premature graying.

I choose tea tree and lemon oil as the base fragrance and set it to ‘mild’.

My hair is wavy and tends to frizz, but this shampoo gives it surprising definition and texture and feels soothing on my scalp. A real treat. 5/5
