All alone in the moonlight: Trump adviser dubbed the ‘Music Man’ would play show tunes like Memory from Cats to calm him during tantrums, Stephanie Grisham claims in new book
- Former White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham wrote in her book that former President Donald Trump could be reassured by certain show tunes
- The 45th president was reportedly especially fond of the Cats song Memories
- The song is about an outcast cat who likes to be accepted by a colony of cats
- A White House aide served as a ‘music man’ who would play songs to calm Trump down
A White House official dubbed the “Music Man” was tasked with calming former President Donald Trump during moments of anger by playing him his favorite songs, including a tune by Broadway sensation Cats.
It’s one of the weirder accusations in I’ll Take Your Questions Now, an upcoming book by former White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham.
The all-encompassing book, due out next week, is full of allegations against the former president. He claims he abused his staff, made sexual comments about a young White House employee and wanted to impress Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Grisham also described Trump’s “terrifying” mood and said the song Memory from the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Cats was known to calm him down.
Grizabella, the character of Cats, steals the show on the hit Broadway show, in which she performs a song called Memories, which describes her desire to belong and be accepted by others.
White House official Max Miller earned the nickname “Music Man” for playing Trump’s favorite tunes during his temper tantrums, The New York Times reported.
Composed by Webber for the musical in 1981, Memory is the most famous tune from Broadway’s longest-running show.
Barbara Streisand recorded the song for her 1981 album Memories, and it peaked at number 52 on the US charts.
Former President Donald Trump has reportedly toned down his anger at the sound of show tunes
The book ‘I’ll Take Your Questions Now’ is by former White House secretary Stephanie Grisham
The tune in the musical is led by Grizabella, a once-sophisticated feline who ended up living alone in the gutter and eager to impress the other cats.
She sings a prelude to the song at the end of the first act, reminiscing about her life before she was banned from the community.
Towards the end of the musical, she sings the full version of the song while begging to be accepted.
It is not clear which version of the song Trump prefers. It was covered by Barbara Streisand and in a Hollywood remake of the 2019 film, which received scathing online reviews
Trump denied the book’s claims in a statement on Tuesday, which he also used as an opportunity to bash the author.
“Stephanie didn’t have what it needed and that was clear from the start,” he said in a statement to The New York Times. He claimed she became “very angry and bitter” after the relationship ended.
“She had big problems and we thought she should solve those problems herself. Now, like everyone else, she’s being paid by a far-left publisher to say bad and untrue things.’
Twitter users had a field day after learning Trump had an affinity for the cat classic.
One user, @HistoryCausal, posted a photo of a man blatantly covering his face, saying, “That’s when you realize that one of the many things that kept us from nuclear war was a ‘Music Man’ who used ‘Memories’.” from Cats played.’
Another user suggested that Trump use the tune as his theme song during the 2024 election, if he chooses to run.
Lyrics to the Cats song Memories
Turn your face to the moonlight
Let your memory guide you
Open open enter
if you find there
The meaning of what happiness is
Then a new life begins
All alone in the moonlight
I can laugh about the past
I was beautiful then
The time I knew what happiness was
Let the memory
Burnt out end of smoky days
The musty cold smell of the morning
A street lamp dies
Another night over
Another day is coming
I have to wait for the sunrise
I have to think about a new life
And I must not admit
When the dawn comes
Tonight will be a memory too
And a new day will begin
Sunlight through the trees in summer
Like a flower when the dawn breaks
The memory fades
It’s so easy to leave me
All alone with the memory
Of my days in the sun
if you touch me
You will understand what happiness is
Look, a new day
