‘I only had three attackers to choose from’: Ronald Koeman laments Barcelona’s injury problems after being swept aside by Bayern Munich

  • Barcelona was defeated 3-0 at home by German giant Bayern Munich on Tuesday
  • Thomas Muller’s first half shot was deflected on Eric Garcia for the opening goal
  • Robert Lewandowski showed his predatory skills to score a brace in the second half
  • A ‘Koeman Out’ banner emerged from a flat Camp Nou stadium on Tuesday

Ronald Koeman lamented Barcelona’s worn-out squad when his side lost 3-0 to Bayern Munich.

“I only had three attackers to choose from,” said the Dutch coach who ended up with four teenagers on the field.

“Of course we would have liked to compete better, but there is a difference in their quality as a team” [and ours]. There was also a big difference between the banks. We have a lot of players with a great future, but right now we need players back from injuries.”

Koeman added: “We started well, but we had problems moving forward. We were unlucky with the first goal and from their second goal it was very difficult. At the moment they are a better team than us.

‘Here we are now. Jordi Alba was sick last night and still playing. This was Luuk De Jong’s first game. Alba was very tired and we didn’t want to risk him playing the whole game.”

Gerard Pique also put on a brave face after Barcelona’s yet another heavy defeat to Bayern and said the team could still compete in Europe when injured players return.

“We competed in the first half and their goal came from a deflection,” the Barca captain said after the 3-0 defeat.

“The team didn’t hide and we had young players making their debut in the Champions League. I am sure we will eventually compete. Ansu (Fati), Ousmane (Dembele) and Kun (Aguero) have yet to come back from injury. We are clearly not among the favorites for the Champions at the moment.”

Pique also defended teammate Sergio Roberto, who was whistled by home crowds when he was knocked out in the second half. He said: “I wish people would remember that Sergio Roberto is not a fullback and it is a sacrifice to play there. People are free to express their opinion, but personally it hurts me when there is so much whistling.’

A ‘Koeman Out’ banner was displayed before kick-off, but removed by club staff. The former Everton manager’s job was called into question over the summer when Barcelona president Joan Laporta admitted he was looking for potential replacements.

Last week, a leak from the club suggested that Koeman had been given a contract extension, but full of conditions regarding the way the team plays, the players selected and the level of success.

A lack of alternatives and money to pay off Koeman is likely keeping him at work. Laporta doesn’t believe this is the right time to put Xavi in charge. He took an interest in Julian Nagelsmann earlier this year and the coach who is now Bayern has certainly left his mark at the Camp Nou.
