Trail use has tripled in the United States since the coronavirus pandemic struck in early 2020, according to data from AllTrails, a provider of crowdsourced information on all kinds of trails. Even before that, tens of millions of Americans enjoyed a trail system launched in 1965, when President Lyndon B. Johnson told Congress that hikers, horse riders, and cyclists were “forgotten outdoorsmen.” “For them,” he said, “we need to have both trails and highways.”
