NBC football announcer Al Michaels received a wave of criticism for misidentifying the wife of Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford during Sunday night’s broadcast.

While Stafford led the Rams to a 34-14 win over the visiting Chicago Bears in his first game with Los Angeles, Michaels described the 33-year-old quarterback’s struggles with the Detroit Lions over the past 12 years.

“He wasn’t helped — as his wife Kelly watches — by that defense, and they never really had a Detroit running race,” Michaels said as NBC cameras turned to a split screen of Stafford and a blonde woman.

Unfortunately for NBC and Michaels, the cameras had the wrong blonde woman, which they soon realized. Kelly Stafford was actually a few feet away from that woman in the same luxury box.

Kelly Stafford is in yellow – there she is with a… [No.] 9 on it,” Michaels said, correcting his mistake.

“We’re going at warp speed here,” Michaels said, explaining the error. “When Matthew looks at the tape of this and says ‘That’s not my wife'” [that’s because] we had someone else on the phone beforehand.’

Michaels and NBC took to Twitter to criticize the error.

“The NBC Broadcast team saw some blond women and said ‘one of them must be Kelly Stafford, right?'” one fan tweeted.

“Yeah, that’s definitely not Kelly Stafford,” another fan tweeted. “That’s embarrassing.”

Another Twitter user predicted that Kelly Stafford would “get pissed.”

One of the reasons fans knew the first wife wasn’t Kelly Stafford was because the mother of four had publicly battled cancer during her husband’s tenure with the Lions.

In April 2019, Kelly Stafford was diagnosed with an acoustic neuroma brain tumor, requiring 12 hours of surgery, which was ultimately successful.
