MARTIN KEOWN DISCUSSES TACTICS: Manchester United must bring back the fear factor, starting with Everton, who could cause Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side issues even without Richarlison and Dominic Calvert Lewin

  • Everton can cause problems at Manchester United despite absences
  • Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin are both still missing for the Toffees
  • The likes of Andros Townsend and Demarai Gray have been stepped up for Everton
  • Manchester United have a lot of depth, but need to bring back the fear factor

Rafa Benitez arrives at Old Trafford with the goal of becoming the first manager to win there with three different Premier League teams, following previous victories with Liverpool and Chelsea.

Even with their two best forwards – Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison – on the sidelines, Everton can harass Manchester United. Benitez’s 4-4-1-1 system takes care of that.

In every Premier League game this season, Everton have used Abdoulaye Doucoure and Allan as a midfield pair. They are an all action duo. Doucoure brings the ball forward as Allan has made the second most tackles to date.

On the left wing is right-footed Alex Iwobi and on the right is left-footed Andros Townsend, who has made more shots outside the box this season than any other player. When these inverted wingers come in, the full backs come out to provide width.

Everton got off to a great start despite the absence of Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison. Salomon Rondon fills in up front and Demarai Gray has been revived in a spare role just behind him.

United have not lost on the road in the Premier League in 622 days. But at Old Trafford they have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last eight league games and lost six at home last season.

The fear factor for the opposition must return. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a huge range of attacking talent at his disposal, as he showed against Villarreal in the Champions League last night when he brought in Edinson Cavani and Jesse Lingard.

United is packed with excellent, experienced players. Solskjaer must make sure his squad’s superiority counts.

If United want to win the Premier League, they need to make Old Trafford a fortress again.
