Manchester United beat Reading 2-0 as the 2021-2022 Women’s Super League season began in front of Sky Sports’ cameras.
The Red Devils, who finished fourth last season, are looking for a spot in the Champions League and got off to a perfect start under new manager Marc Skinner.
Kirsty Hanson opened the scoring in the 39th minute as she ran to Ella Toone’s through ball to finish calmly past Grace Moloney in the Reading goal.
The Royals thought they had tied the score shortly after half-time when Brooke Chaplen’s fierce shot bounced up and down the goal line. Replays suggested the ball had crossed the line, but the umpires were unmoved.
That moment proved decisive, as United scored a crucial second goal just three minutes later. Toone was again the supplier as she fired Ona Battle on the edge of the penalty area, with the fullback firing a powerful shot into the top right corner.
