British Formula 1 star Lewis Hamilton was inches from a tragedy at the Italian Grand Prix after title rival Max Verstappen’s car flew over his head after they pulled each other out of the race.
Verstappen’s Red Bull flew off a banked corner at Monza and onto the top of Hamilton’s Mercedes, with only the protective Halo device saving the reigning world champion from serious injury.
The Red Bull nosed into the gravel first and both drivers emerged unscathed from the carnage in the final dramatic turn in an increasingly heated world championship game.

The dramatic moment came on lap 26 of 53 on the Italian circuit. As Hamilton exited the pit lane, Verstappen pulled up next to him and they battled for position in the Variante Del Rettifilo corner.
Dutch driver Verstappen ran wide and the raised curb launched his Red Bull into the air, landing the rear of the machine on Hamilton’s Mercedes, which had been pushed off the track.
Verstappen’s car also plowed into the gravel pit on the side of the track, with the back of his Red Bull on Hamilton’s car left.

In a clear sign that the incident – the second of the season after they collided at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, sending Verstappen into the tire wall – will do little to ease tensions between the pair, Verstappen stormed off without checking Hamilton’s well-being.
“That’s what happens when you don’t leave any space,” Verstappen radioed to his Red Bull team as he exited his car and walked back to the pit lane.
Hamilton lifted himself out of the cockpit of his Mercedes a few minutes later to take the same walk.
