The heir to a powerful legal dynasty whose wife and son were found dead in June has been rushed to hospital after being shot in the head.

Alex Murdaugh was injured in Hampton County, South Carolina on Saturday and was rushed to a hospital in Savannah for treatment.

No further updates on his condition have been given. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division was called to the incident at 1:30 p.m. EST Saturday.

Investigators are now investigating what happened and have not given any details about who shot Murdaugh, or why.

His attorney Jim Griffin told the News Observer that the widower was on his way to Charleston hours before the shooting, but had had car trouble and interrupted his journey.

In June, Alex’s son Paul and his wife Margaret were found dead at the family hunting lodge.

No arrests have been made, but Paul was linked to two other deaths in the area.
