Jemima Kirke celebrated this week’s Met Gala with a tongue-in-cheek review of a number of celebrities’ red carpet looks, and she didn’t hold back while poking fun of some of fashion’s brightest stars.
The actress-turned-amateur fashion critic shared her witty takes on her Instagram Stories on Tuesday, the day after the star-studded event benefitting the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.
In the series of posts that Kirke, 36, dubbed her ‘Met Gala musings,’ she suggested Hailey Baldwin’s black Saint Laurent gown was a bit of a boring choice for the ‘American independence’ theme.
Keeping it real: Jemima Kirke, 36, gave a cheeky review of celebrities’ Met Gala looks on her Instagram Stories on Tuesday, the day after the event
Too sexy? The former Girls star took a dig at Megan Fox’s sexy cut-out gown by Dundas, which was inspired by Bram Stoker’s Dracula
Not a fan: Kirke compared Kendall Jenner’s see-through gown to the Bravo reality series ‘Shahs of Sunset,’ while Irina Shayk’s look earned a ‘P for pass’
‘Date night dress’: Kirke suggested that Hailey Baldwin’s black Saint Laurent gown was a bit boring for her taste
‘Date night dress. On a Tuesday. Second date dress. Impromptu dinner round the corner dress,’ she captioned a photo of the 24-year-old on the red carpet.
British actress Emily Blunt, 38, channeled Hedy Lamarr in Ziegfeld Girl in her custom Miu Miu dress and star crown, but Kirke took issue with the look, particularly the headpiece.
‘No star crowns past age 24,’ she wrote, later adding: ‘Changed my mind. No star crowns past 7.’
Designer Gilbert Adrian designed the original gown worn by Lamarr, and Kirke called the Miu Miu-inspired version a ‘tired Pinterest staple,’ saying: ‘Adrian’s legacy deserved more than this.’
Meanwhile, Kendall Jenner’s sheer, crystal-embellished gown by Givenchy was a modern take on the dress worn by Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady. It was a crowd-pleaser for many fashion fans, but Kirke wasn’t impressed.
Found a winner! Kirke loved Billie Eilish’s look and called it ‘heaven.’ She also joked that the singer has the ‘best rack in the game’
Pass: Kirke dissed Emily Blunt’s star crown not once but twice, making it clear she wasn’t a fan of the British star’s Ziegfeld Girl-inspired look by Miu Miu
Not impressed: Kirke thought Natalia Bryant’s 1960s-inspired bubble dress by Connor Ives a ‘yawn’
Opinion: The Sex Education star didn’t didn’t think Lorde or Grimes made any effort with their red carpet looks
‘Shahs of Sunset,’ she captioned Jenner’s photo, referencing the Bravo reality series.
The former Girls star also took a dig at Megan Fox’s sexy cut-out gown by Dundas, which was inspired by Bram Stoker’s Dracula, saying it was ‘truly a good look for a porn award ceremony.’
Kirke’s major gripe was that a number of celebrities played it safe with their looks, calling 18-year-old Natalia Bryant’s 1960s-inspired bubble dress by Connor Ives a ‘yawn.’
While commenting on the light blue gown worn by Jasmine Tookes, she noted that it’s ‘hard to see the difference between a Met Gala dress and an Oscar dress lately.’
And she gave Irina Shayk’s sheer floral gown by Moschino a ‘P for pass.’
Nope: As for New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s controversial ‘Tax the Rich’ dress designed by Brother Vellies, Kirke wasn’t a fan of the ‘irony’
Not holding back: Kirke poked fun at the outfits worn by Margaret Qualley and TikTok star Dixie D’Amelio
Playing it safe: Kirke felt the gown worn by Jasmine Tookes looked too much like an Oscars dress
‘Make. An. Effort. Please,’ she captioned a photo of Lorde, who flashed her abs in a white jacket with beaded embroidery and a matching floor-length skirt by Bode.
Kirke shared a similar sentiment when criticizing the Iris van Herpen look worn by Grimes, writing: ‘Again. Please make an effort.’
The Sex Education star seemed to be mocking Margaret Qualley’s white Chanel frock when she described it as being ‘chic for a cult wedding.’
TikTok star Dixie D’Amelio, who made her Met Gala debut in a Breakfast at Tiffany’s-inspired look by Valentino, earned just one word from Kirke: ‘Halloween.’
As for New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s controversial ‘Tax the Rich’ dress designed by Brother Vellies, Kirke noted: ‘Irony is my least favorite POV.’
Changed her mind: Kirke was a fan of Kaia Gerber’s black gown at first, but then she decided it was the ‘wrong event’ to wear it to
Winner? Kirke gave Iman somewhat of a backhanded compliment when commenting on her gold feather gown and massive headpiece by Dolce & Gabbana x Harris Reed
Added touches: Kirke approved of Gigi Hadid’s red hair (left) and Hunter Schafer’s spider accessory (right)
‘Obviously great’: Kirke had nothing cheeky to say about Zoe Kravitz’s completely see-through mesh gown by Saint Lauren
However, there were some style stars, according to Kirke, who gave Iman somewhat of a backhanded compliment.
‘Iman may be the first person to overdress for the Met Gala. She wins,’ she wrote of the model’s gold feather gown and massive headpiece by Dolce & Gabbana x Harris Reed.
Billie Eilish, 19, oozed Old Hollywood in her dramatic Oscar de la Renta gown, which was a far cry from her signature baggy clothes.
Kirke captioned a photo of Eilish: ‘Heaven. (Best rack in the game.)
The actress also gushed that she was ‘obsessed’ with Gigi Hadid’s Prada gown and red Jessica Rabbit-style red hair, adding: ‘Bring back wigs.’
She gets it: While Kim Kardashian’s Balenciaga blackout gown was widely mocked online, it earned a stamp of approval from Kirke
Hah! Kirke thought New York Rep. Carolyn Maloney’s ‘Equal Rights for Women’ gown was ‘funny’
Throwback: Proving that her commentary was all in good fun, she also posted a photo of herself at the Met Gala in 2017 with the caption: ‘LOL’
Brining looks: Kirke most recently attended the 2019 Met Gala with her Girls co-star and longtime friend Lena Dunham
Kirke thought New York Rep. Carolyn Maloney’s ‘Equal Rights for Women’ gown was ‘funny,’ but she had nothing cheeky to say about Zoe Kravitz’s completely see-through mesh gown by Saint Lauren.
‘[It’s] obviously great and we all wish we could wear it,’ she wrote. ‘Moving on…’
