Police launched a murder investigation last night following the death of a ‘beloved’ grandfather who was attacked outside his home.

Retired soldier Frank Fishwick, 86, died in hospital on Saturday, less than 24 hours after suffering a broken nose in an incident outside his home in Preston.

A 19-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Police investigating Mr Fishwick’s death today released a photo and family tribute of the retiree, who served in the Army Royal Core of Engineers – commonly known as the Sappers.

In a statement, his family said: “(Frank was an) adored father and grandfather who will be sorely missed by family and friends.

He served in the Army Royal Core of Engineers and devoted his working life to Leyland Motors.

‘He was much loved by his friends, lent a helping hand when needed and his humor brought joy to many.

“Our thanks go to Lancashire Police, who work tirelessly to bring justice for an unforgivable act of violence.”

Police say they were called to The Paddock, Fulwood, around 3 p.m. Friday, following a report of an attack.

Officers arrived on the scene and found an 86-year-old man with a facial injury, later diagnosed with a broken nose.

The man, later called Mr Fishwick, was taken to hospital for treatment, but died yesterday morning.

A murder investigation has been launched and police say a 19-year-old man from Preston has now been arrested on suspicion of murder. He is currently in custody.

A Lancashire Police spokesman said: ‘We are continuing to look for witnesses and are asking anyone who witnessed the attack or has any information they believe could help to contact police.

“Our thoughts remain with Mr Fishwick’s family at this sad time.

“Anyone with information is requested to call the police at 101, quoting log 0879 dated September 10, 2021.”
