Five people were treated in hospital this afternoon after a suspected ‘acid attack’ on a busy Cardiff street.

South Wales Police were called to City Road around 2:45pm on Sunday after reports of an attack.

A cordon was placed outside a row of businesses including Afro Barber Shop and Ponnuswamy Restaurant.

Photos of the scene show several half-empty milk cartons along with discarded water bottles on the floor.

Witnesses have claimed on social media that the incident was an ‘acid attack’.

Eyewitnesses said a major emergency service was involved in the incident.

A South Wales Police spokesman said: ‘Around 2:44pm today, emergency services visited an address on City Road, Cardiff, following reports of an attack.

“Five people were taken to hospital with superficial injuries. Officers are calling on anyone with cell phone or dashcam footage of the incident or aftermath to contact us quoting ref 2100312749.”

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service confirmed firefighters were ‘assisting’ but said it was a ‘police matter’.

A spokesman for the Welsh Ambulance Service said: ‘We were called shortly before 3pm this afternoon, Sunday 5 September, with reports of an incident in the City Road area of ​​Cardiff.

“Ambulance personnel, including the Trust’s Hazardous Area Response Team, arrived on the scene and two people were taken to hospital.”
