A heroic 86-year-old father died after diving into a canal to save the life of the wheelchair-bound daughter to whom he was ‘devoted’.

Lawrence Casey, 86, drowned in Cornwall’s Bude Canal at 5:20 p.m. Wednesday evening.

He jumped into the icy water to save Jessica, who is in her twenties, from drowning.

But the man himself got into trouble and died while Jessica was pulled by passers-by and taken to the hospital.

The Casey family said from their home in Callington, Cornwall: ‘He was committed to caring for his disabled daughter and his last act of love was to sacrifice his life to save hers.

“We extend our sincere thanks to the public who also selflessly helped save her life.”

It’s not clear how wheelchair-bound Jessica ended up in the water.

Francesca, another of Mr Casey’s daughters, took to social media to thank the “incredible passersby who stopped to help during the incident at Bude Canal in which my father was tragically killed trying to save my sister.”

She added: ‘We are of course deeply shocked, but I am so incredibly encouraged by those who have helped. My family and I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone involved.’

Jessica was taken to hospital for treatment, while a police spokesperson confirmed her father had died.

They said: ‘The death will not be treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.
