Emma Raducanu saw her Instagram followers rise to 1.2 million after her sensational win at the US Open in New York yesterday, beating Leylah Fernandez 6-4, 6-3.

The 18-year-old athlete from Bromley, who became the first British woman to win since Virginia Wade’s Wimbledon victory in 1977, saw her social media page explode last night as more than 500,000 new fans flocked to her Instagram account to follow the youngster.

Emma’s incredible performances in New York and at the SW19 tournament have lifted her from 366th in the world rankings to the top 25, boosted her Instagram following to a staggering 1.2 million, and secured her first Vogue photo shoot, which appears in next month’s issue.

It comes after popular culture and brand expert Nick predicted the teen would become a “billion dollar brand” and A-list sensation.

Emma broke through this year at Wimbledon, where she became the youngest British woman to reach the fourth round of singles since 1959 after receiving a wildcard entry.

Emma won an army of fans at Wimbledon and admitted in her charmingly unassuming interview after the match on the court that she never expected to make it to the second week.

After her first round win, she gained 30,000 followers on Instagram and after her second win, she gained 153,000 followers.

On her Instagram page, the rising star refers to her global roots: London, where she now lives, Toronto, where she was born and the two cities where her parents are, Bucharest in Romania and Shenyang in China.

Nick told FEMAIL that fans need to get to know Emma to be recognized worldwide and have the “star crossover power” to become an A-list celebrity like Serena Williams, the American tennis champion with famed singers Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland as friends.

According to Nick: ‘Emma will become a household name not only in the UK, but also in the US and worldwide, which is a real game-changer.

“At eighteen, she is now taking to the skies, both in the sporting world and as a celebrity,” he said.

She now has the star power of crossover athletes like Serena Williams and Andy Murray.

“She will have brands that will flock to her and now is the time for her to carefully decide which offerings are the most lucrative, brand appropriate, age appropriate and have the longest lifespan.

‘If a top fashion or cosmetics brand wants to appeal to a younger target group, it is the perfect choice to attract new fans.

‘I don’t see her working with fast fashion but with more established companies with a strong brand identity.

“At her age she will no doubt be aware of the environment, so brands like Stella McCartney’s and Victoria Beckham’s would be a perfect choice.”

Emma will be featured in a photo shoot in the October issue of Vogue magazine – a step that could put her well on her way to becoming both a celebrity and a sports star, according to Chris Southgate, Managing Director at marketing agency CHS.

Chris said: ‘Her great performances, both at Wimbledon and now the US Open, means she has the opportunity to become the next great famous tennis player – and also a role model for all British sports.

‘No matter which one [brand] towards she decides to head in, the only safe bet is that she is already well on her way to becoming a national treasure, both on and off the field.”

Tim Crow, a sports marketing consultant who advised Coca-Cola on football sponsorship for 20 years, told the Guardian: “I haven’t had that many calls from clients, big brands, interested in her since Lewis Hamilton broke through in Formula One.

‘If she wins’ [the final] she’s going to be one of the hottest properties in British sport, if not the hottest.’

Not only did Emma get social media fans and praise from pop culture experts, but she also got a lot of praise from prolific figures.

The Queen herself wrote to Emma: “It is a remarkable achievement at such a young age and a testament to your hard work and dedication.”

She was joined by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who praised her “stunning performance and historic Grand Slam victory!” applaud.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said “we are all immensely proud of you” while praising Raducanu’s “extraordinary skill, poise and guts”.
