A suspected ‘carjacker’ responsible for causing a horrific crash that killed four people, including himself, has a lengthy criminal record and was reportedly on parole when tragedy struck.
Walter Huling, 31, was identified as the suspected car thief who swiped a Toyota Matrix from a Colorado transportation station on Nov. 24 before colliding head-on with a family of six.
Huling was on parole at the time and was scheduled to be discharged in January, according to his criminal record obtained by The Denver Gazette.
The list of violations of the law between 2013 and 2018 included four assaults, three violations of the protection order and one charge of bribery, burglary and driving under the influence.
Huling is now accused of colliding with another vehicle while driving along a Colorado highway Monday afternoon.
The Colorado Highway Patrol said he was driving a stolen Toyota Matrix when he lost control and crashed into the family’s Ford sedan.
The crash killed a father, Alvin Corado, 35, his two children, MaKenlee Corado, 11, and Toretto Corado, 8, and a third child, Jase Green, 12.
Corado’s 13-year-old sister, Mia, and Green’s 14-year-old brother, Jordan, survived the crash and were airlifted to a hospital.
Five people were killed and two were seriously injured in a horror crash on November 24
The man believed responsible for the crime was named Walter Huling, 31, who also died in the crash
Makenlee Corado, 11, and Toretto Corado, 8, were killed in the crash, while their older sister, Mia, 13, was airlifted to a hospital.
An hour before the accident, the car was reportedly stolen from a parking garage. The woman driving the car said she was pulled from her car after refusing to give the man a ride.
George Brauchler, the county’s district attorney, told local ABC affiliate KMGH-TV that Huling’s criminal history spans 11 pages and dates back to when he was a juvenile.
“This man’s criminal history and the fact that he appears to have been on parole and this happened seems like we are failing the community,” Brauchler added.
The prosecutor said the horror crash has resulted in community anger and questions about how the state deals with crime.
“I have questions for the state of Colorado, especially for a man who was on parole after committing a parole violation, and those questions have to be stern, and that is, ‘What are we doing?’ Who are you putting out on the street?’ Brachler added.
One of his most egregious run-ins with the law stemmed from a six-year prison sentence after he was arrested for assaulting a man and his wife in downtown Denver.
He was also accused of assaulting the arresting police officer. Hurling pleaded guilty to second-degree assault.
Hurling’s criminal history also included charges of criminal mischief, sexual contact without consent, resisting arrest and two counts of assault on a police officer while in custody, court records show.
Alvin Corado, a 35-year-old father, was killed in the crash along with his two children. According to his family, he was an American soldier
A third victim, Jase Green, 12, also died in the crash. The suspect had a long criminal record
When Mia woke up in the hospital, she told her mother that she already knew her siblings and father had died
Following his stint in prison, he was charged again in March 2024 for violating a protective order in Boulder, to which he also pleaded guilty.
As Colorado authorities are forced to grapple with the circumstances that led to the horror crash, two families are left in mourning.
Marissa Corado, the mother of two children who died in the crash, is not only mourning the loss of her family but also supporting her third daughter, Mia, who is recovering in the hospital.
She shared an update on Facebook on Friday that Mia has fluid in her lungs and has broken several ribs.
Marissa said Thursday that doctors removed Mia’s intubation tube and delayed the anesthesia so they could wake her up.
Jordan Green, 14, survived the crash. His mother said in a Facebook post that he was able to take a few steps
Mia’s mother said in a Facebook update that her daughter had broken several ribs in the crash
“Not even ten minutes after the tube was taken out, Mia asked the question we knew was coming and had been preparing for regarding the child’s life, about half an hour earlier,” Marissa said.
“After I asked where her father was, and I responded with the news of the death of her siblings and father, she responded with “I know.”
Marissa said Mia remembered the horror of the accident and was awake the entire time, even trying to help her siblings and her father.
The mother added that her daughter was aware that she would not be suitable to fly for her father’s service.
Jennifer Watkins, Jordan and Jase’s mother, shared an update on Saturday that Jordan was in good spirits and was able to take a few steps.
Huling had a criminal record, including two prison terms, and had reportedly been released on parole
The families have set up GoFundMe pages to provide financial support during this unimaginable time
In a separate post, she said her late son, Jase, was a “sweet baby” who was loved by many.
Watkins added that her partner, Alvin, was a “devoted father figure and a proud member of the United States military whose life was tragically taken.”
“Alvin was a good man – dedicated, loving and deeply committed to the children he helped raise,” she added.
Two GoFundMe pages have been set up for Mia and Jordan as their families cope with the tremendous loss and medical care.
The Daily Mail has contacted the families for comment.
