Democrat Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez appeared at the Met Gala in a white dress with bright red letters that spell “TAX THE RICH.”
The congresswoman was photographed on the red carpet of the New York City socialite event, where tickets go up to $35,000 and tables $250,000.
AOC wore a tailored Brother Vellies off-the-shoulder dress designed by creative director Aurora James, ELLE reported.
It will be her first time attending the gala, as her political message has already sparked controversy during this year’s ‘In America: A Lexicon of Fashion’ exhibition.

AOC has been very vocal about its stance on taxing millionaires in the past
AOC has been very vocal about its stance on taxing millionaires in the past. In 2019, she advocated raising taxes to 70 percent for the wealthy to fund climate change action.
“As a working-class woman, [I] wanted to enjoy the event but also “break the fourth wall” and challenge the industry, Ocasio-Cortez told Vogue.
The reactions from social media users on Twitter ranged from joking about AOC’s stunt while assisting at the lavish event, to siding with its premise.
Donald Trump Jr was quick to emphasize the irony behind the congresswoman’s dress.
“The ‘tax the rich’ dress as she hangs out with a bunch of wealthy left-wing elites or the lack of masks after spending the past 18 months as one of the biggest authoritarian mask Karens in the country?” Trump Jr wrote in his Tweet.

When Aurora and I first partnered, we started a conversation about what it means to be working women of color at the Met,” AOC said of her dress design with Aurora James.
‘Tax the Rich’……But first I’m going to have the time of my life with them at the most extravagant over-the-top party of the year which is essentially a celebration of wealth.’ another user agreed.
One user praised AOC’s dress, stating that “Democrats are just better at everything,” while Melania Trump’s 2018 controversy after she wore a jacket contrasted it with “I really don’t care, do you?” amid the migrant crisis at the border.
About her dress design, AOC said, “When Aurora and I first partnered, we started a conversation about what it means to be working women of color at the Met,”
“And we said, you know, we can’t just play along, but we have to break through the fourth wall and challenge some institutions. And while the Met is known for its spectacle, we need to have a conversation about it,” she added.

In a 2019 Tweet, AOC wrote: When we say ‘tax on the rich’, we mean nest-doll-hunting rich. Prison rich for profit. Betsy DeVos, rich in student loans and sharks.
Trick-the-country-in-war realm. Grant-personnel-w-food-stamps rich. Because THAT kind of rich is just not good for society, and they are like 10 people.’
James, who designed AOC’s dress, is the founder of the 15 Percent Pledge, an initiative that asks brands to “pawn 15 percent of their shelf space to Black-owned companies.”
