ABC News Breakfast host Lisa Millar has broken her silence about the despicable online abuse that drove her off Twitter.
It was revealed last week that the high-profile TV host had shut down her social media account after left-wing trolls accused her of bias against the Scott Morrison government.
Millar said the relentless attacks had peaked in the past two months, with critics furious after she allegedly smiled at a clip about former Prime Minister John Howard.
“It reached new heights of ridiculousness in the fortnight before I quit, when I was criticized for allegedly smiling while introducing a 20-second clip of John Howard talking about Afghanistan,” she said. The Australian Media Diary.

“Shortly after that, I quietly deactivated my account for 30 days. I didn’t make a big deal about it. I wasn’t aggressive to the trolls.
“I decided to control a deteriorating situation and minimize my exposure by removing myself from the platform altogether.”
Millar initially planned to take a 30-day break from the site, but has since said she won’t be returning until it’s “safe for women.”
Millar joined the ABC in the 1990s and worked as a US correspondent before replacing News Breakfast host Virginia Trioli full-time in August 2019.
Miller, her close partner, and Leigh Sales and Insiders host David Speers, host of 7:30 a.m., were the three most trolled ABC employees in the past 12 months.
Millar, a Walkley Award-winning Queenslander, is the daughter of former National Party MP Clarrie Millar.
The family bond has bizarrely sparked claims by social media critics that she exhibits coalition bias.
Left-wing trolls have piled on the abuse at every opportunity, claiming Millar is giving an easy ride to Liberal Prime Ministers and MPs at the expense of Labor politicians.

But others have also brutally attacked her personal appearance.
A Twitter account, @lefty_human, posted a photo of Hollywood actor Joaquin Phoenix as The Joker, with the caption, “Lisa Miller’s makeup.”
“I’ve been watching the ABC for a few years now, Lisa Millar is the most biased and unintelligent announcer they’ve had,” Michael Todd tweeted.
“The way she has behaved for the past three months is appalling. Literally no one can stand her regret. She’s the female Barnaby Joyce.’
‘We’ll say it again. Please @breakfastnews find Lisa Millar another job,” Lee Stonehouse tweeted. “We just can’t watch it anymore.
“We need some kind of balance when she interviews Labor politicians.”
After users saw that she had shut down her account, the vitriol increased and her name became popular nationally, as critics once again targeted her alleged political bias.

However, many jumped on Millar’s defense after discovering she had disabled her account, including co-host Michael Rowland.
“She was on the receiving end of some really despicable and disturbing personal attacks,” Mr Rowland said.
“We are all criticized here. Nobody is perfect.
“But the things Lisa was exposed to were on a higher level. Those responsible should be ashamed of themselves.’
Veteran left-wing firebrand journalist Mike Carlton praised Millar.
‘Exceptional. I’ve known Lisa Millar since the 1990s, when I last worked at ABC radio,” he tweeted Wednesday.
‘She is a thoroughly professional journalist and a thoroughly nice person.’
Former Labor Party candidate turned ex-director of the NSW Liberal Party, Remo Nogarotto, also paid tribute to Millar’s talent.
“I had the opportunity to deal with Lisa professionally during her stay in London,” he said on Wednesday.

‘Well researched, tough without being dogmatic and respecting the right to an alternative view.
“The cowardly and vicious attacks on her are indicative of the lack of civility in today’s public debate.”
Twitter fan ‘Daniel’ added: ‘Perhaps our Twitter practices should be more pragmatic rather than allowing their political allegiances to drive them into personal attacks and abuse.
“Frankly, make excuses for this vitriol because you don’t like her reporting. It’s ridiculous.’
An ABC spokesperson last week denounced Millar’s attackers after confirming she had disabled her account.
“Lisa has decided to temporarily deactivate her Twitter account after several months of persistent personal attacks,” the spokesperson said.
“Using social media platforms to abuse and bully people is abhorrent and unacceptable.
‘Often women seem to be the target of this kind of behaviour. It should not be tolerated on any level.’
