Prince Charles, 73, who has been president of the institution since 1993, looked smart in a pinstripe suit as he took the stage today.

The royal was pictured wearing his mask when he met flutist Amy Gillen at the opening ceremony, before taking it off to give a lecture.

The royal, who is an avid fan of opera and classical music, was then pictured playing the harpsichord Apolline Khou, a master’s student from France.

Charles made his appearance to officially unveil the new Royal College of Music campus, created by More Music, which was built this year.

Opened in 1883 by the then Prince of Wales (later Edward VII), the RCM has trained some of the most important figures of British and international musical life.

Their site says, ‘With 840 students from more than 55 countries studying at undergraduate, graduate or doctoral levels, the RCM is a vibrant community of talented and open-minded musicians.’

The Queen is the official patron of the college, while Prince Charles has been president since 1993.

Before that, the Queen Mother served as president for four decades and received an honorary degree from the college.
